Comfort in silence and solitude

I absolutely love this picture. Actually it is a series of images I took on a recent trip to St Andrews, Scotland. it was one of those fortunate weeks where the sun shone all week and I was determined to make the most of my days - in particular the mornings, relishing being able ot get up early and walk along the beach.

One of my dreams has been to get up and see the sun rise on the sea's horizon. It wasn't until this trip that I have actually found myself on the east coast, being close to the sea and have woken to a beautifully clear day.

The sun was set to rise at 5.45am. I set my alarm early (5am to be precise) so I could be sure I was up and out of the house in time, I also wanted to watch the world wake up – I wasn’t disappointed.

The dawn was just breaking and the sky was already showing signs of the sun across the skyline in orange and yellow streaks. The beach and sky gradually became brighter and on the dot of 5.45am a beautiful arc of orange began to emerge on the horizon of the sea. I was mesmerised. Trying desperately not to look directly into the sun, I couldn't take my eyes off it, as it gradually rose from the sea into a beautiful orb of orange, castling its glow across the landscape and reflecting across the water.

As I continued my walk back home, a family of finches seemed to follow my path, chattering and chasing each other as I went. I had been out two hours, it seemed a lot less, and the pull to stay outside was incredibly strong. The joy from being outside in the early hours is addictive. When I’m outside walking in nature I feel peaceful and centred and come home with a renewed vitality. It’s a time for me to dream and breathe.
